Roger Bruce Chaffee is an American naval officer and pilot, aeronautical engineer and NASA astronaut participating in the Apollo program. Chaffee was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he became the Eagle Scout. He graduated from High School in 1953 and received a scholarship from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. He started college at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he joined the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. He moved to Purdue University in 1954, went on to join Phi Kappa Sigma and earned his own pilot's degree. After graduating from Purdue in 1957, Chaffee completed her training in the Navy and was commissioned as a soldier. He began his pilot training at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida, flying planes such as the T-34, T-28, and A3D. He became the Safety and Quality Control Officer for 62 Heavy Photography Squadron. His time in this unit included taking important photos of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, which earned him the Aviation Medal.
