Nell Carter is an American singer and actor. Starting her career in 1970, Carter began singing in the theater, then turned to television. Carter is perhaps best known for his role as Nell Harper on the NBC sitcom Gimme a Break! Originally aired between 1981 and 1987. Carter received two Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nominations for his work on the series. Before Gimme a Break !, Carter won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical in 1978 for her performance in the Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin ', as well as the Primetime Emmy Award for that role at television in 1982 .
