Lynda Barry is an American painter, author and animation teacher. Barry is best known for Ernie Pook's weekly manga series Comeek. She gained attention with her 1988 novel The Good Times are Killing Me, which tells the story of the ethnic friendship between two young girls, adapted into a play. Her second illustrated novel, Cruddy, first appeared in 1999. Three years later, she published One! Hundred! Devil !, a graphic novel that she calls "self-terminology". What It Is is a graphic novel consisting of a dissertation, a collage section and a workbook section, in which Barry guides his readers on methods to unlock their own creative possibilities. it won the 2009 Eisner comic book industry award for best reality-based work. In recognition of her contributions to the comic book genre, Comics Alliance has ranked Barry as one of twelve animators who deserve recognition for their lifetime achievement and who have received an award for the Wisconsin Visual Arts Ensemble. in 2013
