In early 2012, he signed with the popular rapper Hopsin's independent record label Funk Volume and released a mixtape titled Freebasing with Kevin Bacon in June 2012. A year later, on June 11, 2013, he played My Grandma's debut studio album. Basement, which received positive reviews and debuted at No. 152 on the Billboard 200. After separating from Funk Volume, Benton found himself on record labels until 2018 when he signed with Roc Nation, which was founded by Jay-Z in 2008.
