American actor, best remembered for roles in films such as Misery, El Dorado, Brian's Song, The Godfather, The Gambler, Rollerball, Thief, Alien Nation, Bottle Rocket and Elf. On TV he starred in Las Vegas. In a 1973 publication it mentioned Jim "being just a shade over five feet ten and weighing a mere 162 pounds". He also mentioned in an AVClub article that for El Derado and working with guys like Mitchum/Wayne "I immediately went and got three-inch lifts in my cowboy boots so I could stand next to those guys". In 1972 he claimed "I'm about 6 [feet]" although in 2000 said "I'm only 5 feet 10".

James Caan was a rising star in more ways than one: The 5'10" actor wore three-inch lifts in his boots so as not to be dwarfed by larger actors Mitchum and Wayne.
Mitchum good-naturedly accused the 6'4" Wayne of wearing lifts himself to stand even taller than the rest of the cast.
