Why would they want a six-foot-two actor to play a dwarf?

Also, we spent most of the shoot much bigger than a 6-foot-2 guy. I mean, I had lifts in my shoes, I was wider, I was taller, and bigger-haired.

I arrive and, yes, was first greeted by Sam. Firstly, he was tall; for a moment I thought, Is this swine taller than me? [Sam: Yes!] I'm used to being the tallest person on set and its a source of great pride that Richard Armitage had to have lifts in his shoes to get him to my height in The Hobbit, even though we were both dwarves!

Were you surprised to be cast as Thorin, a dwarf, in The Hobbit, given you're 6ft 2in?
Yes! I'm actually 6ft 3in - I think I have grown through doing Pilates. I was really baffled when my agent said that they wanted to audition me for a short dwarf.

Even the biggest names have to fight for the roles they want. People are expecting to see something they've seen before, and when I go to auditions, the directors are surprised to see that I'm almost 6'3'' and not 4'11''
