George Murphy was an American actor, dancer, and politician. A Republican, he served as a U.S. Senator from California, from January 1, 1965 to January 3, 1971. He was also President of the Screen Actors Guild, from 1944 to 1946.

George was the son of Nora B. and Mike Murphy (Michael Charles Murphy), an athletic trainer and coach, including for the Olympics. His father was born in Massachusetts, to Irish parents. His mother was also born in Massachusetts, to an Irish father and a Canadian mother, whose own parents were also Irish. George was married to ballroom dancer Juliette “Julie” Henkel-Johnson, until her death, and then to Bette Blandi, until his death. He had two children with Julie.

George’s paternal grandfather was named James D. Murphy.
